Mold 030: EARTHSHINE
Symbol: The radiance emanating from Mother Earth as symbol of fertility and bounty of nature. This mold is a copy of a XIX century mold in the collection of the Smolensk museum (but the symbol itself is many millennia old). The crosses and triangles in the center represent Earth, and the ribbon around the design - the light, radiance or "Earthshine". Our ancestors knew that the light of the Sun is but a reflection of the invisible "white light" emanating from the Earth.
Wood: black walnut (Juglans nigra). Black walnut is a very, very dense and durable wood. Because it is so hard and tough to carve, few carvers ever carve it unless they use power tools. However, I do enjoy working with this noble wood, and in doing so only use simple hand tools for carving. (I do not use any power tools or electric equipment to carve any of my molds. They are all authentically handmade.) This mold was hand-rubbed with food-grade organic linseed oil to preserve the wood, enhance the wood grain and pattern and give the mold its shiny look. This particular piece of black walnut has a unique crotch figure (the most beautiful yet the toughest wood of all) and very beautiful grain.
Dimensions: 4 x 7 1/2 x 7/8 in (10,6 x 14,7 x 2,1 cm).
